Michael Marion, Director of Golf
With nearly 20 year of experience with private golf clubs, Michael Marion joined CordeValle in the summer of 2010, taking charge of golf operations for both the private club and resort. In addition, he is responsible for overseeing all major events at the resort, including the annual Frys.com Open on the PGA Tour, the 25th PGA Cup in 2011 and the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship in 2013.
Growing up near Chicago, Marion’s first golf job was as a caddy at world-renowned Medinah Country Club, where he later became an associate professional on staff. Honored multiple times by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the top golf instructors in the country, Marion holds the prestigious PGA Master classification, which that less than 1 percent of PGA members obtain.
Marion came to CordeValle from Pronghorn in Bend, Ore., where he served as Director of Golf. Under his direction, Pronghorn was named "No. 1 Golf Community in the Country" by Travel + Leisure in 2009. Also while at Pronghorn, Marion and established the club's first caddie program. Marion also has served as the Director of Golf at Promontory, the Ranch Club in Park City, Utah, as well as at Elk River Club in Banner Elk, N.C. Marion was associate professional at the world-renowned Medinah Country Club near Chicago, which features three world-class courses and has played host to numerous major PGA championship tournaments.
Recipient of the Oregon PGA’s "Horton Smith Award" in 2009 for outstanding contributions to the PGA education programs, Marino also is on the advisory staff for Nike Golf and served as Education Co-Chairman for the PGA Pacific Northwest Section. Marion enjoys spending time with his family and is a diverse sportsman who also has a passion for riding roller coasters. He lives in Morgan Hill with his wife Tamara and their sons Sloan and Sean.
Nick Bailey, Head Golf Professional
A member of the CordeValle staff since 2005, Nick Bailey has served in the position of Head Golf Professional since 2009. A Bay Area product from Cupertino, Bailey pursued a career in the golf industry immediately upon graduating from high school. He chose to attend New Mexico State University so he could complete the Professional Golf Management Program, while earning his marketing degree. During his sophomore year, Bailey passed the PGA Playing Ability Test and turned professional, further developing his game while competing on a mini-tour. Bailey graduated with honors in 2004 and continued to compete in professional tournaments prior to joining CordeValle. An avid sportsman, Nick enjoys golf, baseball, hunting, snowboarding and wakeboarding, along with other competitive sports. A passionate San Francisco Giants fan, he is a regular attendant of games throughout the season at Pac Bell Park.
Thomas Gray, Golf Course Superintendent
With more than three decades of experience managing nationally ranked golf courses throughout the United States, Thomas Gray has been a vital member of the CordeValle staff since 2006. A Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS), Gray previously was Director of Grounds at Olympia Fields Country Club, in Olympia Fields, Ill., and served on the steering committee for the club’s $9.5 million renovations.
A graduate of Michigan State University, with a degree in Crop and Soil Science, Gray has enjoyed an illustrious career overseeing both public and private golf courses, including the prestigious Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan, where he prepared the course for the 1981 U.S. Senior Open and the 1985 U.S. Open. Gray has been credited with elevating Franklin Hills Country Club in Michigan from virtual obscurity to the No. 4-ranked course in the state, by Golf Digest. During his tenure at Franklin, he was often “recruited” by the Detroit Tigers to work on field conditions at Tiger Stadium. Gray currently serves on the USGA Green Section Committee and has held active positions within many other organizations, which includes serving as President of the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation 2000. An accomplished golfer, who serves as a ratings panelist for Golf Digest, Gray is single and lives in Morgan Hill.
