Rosewood Mayakoba Recognized for Sustainable Tourism

May. 12, 2011

RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO - Rosewood Mayakoba, a five-star luxury resort in the Riviera Maya, has been honored with the Sustainable Standard-Setter Award by the Rainforest Alliance, an organization committed to alleviating critical environmental and social issues by championing standards that promote the sustainable use of resources and conserve the planet's biodiversity. The award, which was presented on May 11 at a gala held in New York City at the American Museum of Natural History, recognizes businesses and individuals whose commitment to furthering sustainability is demonstrated by their public support for conservation and outstanding leadership in efforts to improve the environment and support local communities.

"Rosewood Mayakoba prides itself on leading by example when it comes to environmental efforts and we could not be more thrilled or honored to earn this prestigious recognition," said Regional Vice President and Managing Director of Rosewood Mayakoba, Pablo Graf. "We strive to provide our guests an unparalleled experience, but do so without sacrificing the environment and its natural resources."

As part of the program Rosewood Mayakoba, also a Silver-Leed certified resort, was judged on the purchase of environmentally friendly products, use of local and fair-trade services and goods, preservation of native wildlife and landscaping and the protection of local historic properties and sites.

"We are delighted to honor Rosewood Mayakoba for their demonstrated commitment to sustainability," said Tensie Whelan, president of the Rainforest Alliance. "The Rainforest Alliance strives to teach tourism businesses how to adopt best practices that conserve natural resources, protect plants and animals and contribute the well-being of local communities. Mayakoba is setting a shining example and helping to ensure that Mexico’s natural beauty will be enjoyed for generations to come."

The Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers. From large multinational corporations to small, community-based cooperatives, businesses and consumers worldwide are involved in the Rainforest Alliance's efforts to bring responsibly produced goods and services to a global marketplace where the demand for sustainability is growing steadily.
