Rosewood Hotels & Resorts· April 10, 2017

Former professional football player Jon Steven “Steve” Young was a quarterback in the National Football League for 14 seasons during the 1980s and 1990s. Young played college football for Brigham Young University, and played professionally for the Los Angeles Express and the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers. Young was named the Most Valuable Player of the NFL in 1992 and 1994, and the MVP of Super Bowl XXIX. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The winner of a record six NFL passing titles, at the time of his retirement he had the highest passer rating among NFL quarterbacks who had thrown at least 1,500 passing attempts.

Can you describe an experience in San Martin you’ve particularly enjoyed?
During harvest we love to visit the Frantoio Olive Grove where they press the most delicious oils. We’ve had the chance to go behind the scenes at the grove and hand-harvest the fruit – it’s amazing the care that goes into the production of the family-made olive oil.

Do you have a favorite hike?
The three mile vineyard trail by Clos La Chance vineyard is spectacular – we always see deer and other wildlife no matter what the season.

Can you describe your most blissful moment?
There is a huge roaring fireplace right as you enter CordeValle and for me sitting by the fire toasting marshmallows for S’Mores is pure heaven.

Is there an art experience you enjoy?
We like to venture down to Carmel – we love the Monterey Museum of Art, particularly the Ansel Adams photography works they have on display.

Is there a place you like to have lunch in the area?
Fisherman’s Wharf in downtown Monterey is a great place to take in the sights and sounds and smells of Monterey. We particularly like strolling Wharf 2 where you can pick up a delicious cup of hot clam chowder and watch the working trawlers unloading the catch of the day.

What’s your favorite rainy day activity?
My family absolutely loves the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We always make sure we’re there to watch the daily penguin feeding. Watching those creatures is such a delightful experience.

Can you describe your favorite hole on the golf course at CordeValle?
Hole #6. It’s a par 5 in beautiful setting – the breathtaking winery is on your left and there’s the most peaceful meandering creek in front of the green.

What’s your go-to 19th hole drink?
I don’t drink alcohol so I always order Arnold Palmers. The drink is made with fresh tea and freshly squeezed lemonade.

What’s the best way to spend the day if you’re not playing golf?
At least once during each of our stays we arrange for a picnic on the hillside yoga deck. We take a long hike and end at the deck where a picnic lunch of sandwiches and fresh salads is waiting for us.

Is there must-do day trip?
The 17 Mile Drive is absolutely magical. It’s a famous coastal landmark that runs from Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach, featuring awe-inspiring vistas and legendary sites. We’ll do it by bike or we’ll rent a convertible so that we can take in The Lone Cypress, Spanish Bay and Stillwater Cove.

What’s your favorite place to watch the sunset?
There’s no better place in California to watch the sunset then on my patio overlooking the valley. We always stay in the Chardonnay villa when it’s available.

What’s your favorite way to end the day?
The outdoor hot tub in our villa looks over the lush California valley. When the sun is setting and we’re in the hot tub, it’s such a peaceful way to end the day.
