I Left My Heart in San Miguel
Founder of the popular blog EyeSwoon Athena Calderone reminisces about her trip to this Mexican oasis
The colors, the light, the people, the poetry of the hyper-visual city of San Miguel de Allende make my eyes swoon. The area also keeps me grounded. It pulls my head down towards the cobblestone. Yes, here I have my head in the stone as opposed to having my head in the clouds, because the stone is what dictates the gorgeous cast of colors throughout the city.
The golden yellow and blushy red palette that colors the city’s architecture comes from the stone. I just love this. The city was built from the ground up, and it will remain that way forever. You see, San Miguel’s zoning laws not only govern the building sizes and ban English-language signs, but they also regulate the paint colors. And that’s a huge part of what makes this quaint artist community so damn charming. I love myself a controlled palette!
Take a tour of some of the beauty my eyes lingered upon while I ambled around the historic center. As I wandered the red and yellow streets of San Miguel, I took in the colonial haciendas, adorned with bougainvillea, and soaked up the golden sunlight casting its spell over me during magic hour. I am smitten by the artistic, live-in-the-moment San Miguel way of life and find myself dreaming of how and when I can return. TBD if Athena Calderone will join the ranks of the city’s many American expats!
