Heidi Gosman and Penny Klein: Caribbean Cool
In 2002 Heidi Gosman and Penny Klein launched heidi klein, a luxury boutique in West London designed to offer the perfect holiday wardrobe under one roof. “We set out to reinvent swimwear shopping into an exciting and enjoyable experience, while providing everything our clients desired in order to look and feel gorgeous on holiday,” explains Heidi.
Two years later, the heidi klein collection was launched. The inspiration came from listening to clients, understanding what works and then creating a collection of exquisitely cut swimwear with an impeccable fit. Crafted with love, the collection was an immediate success and was soon distributed through key department stores, boutiques and resorts worldwide.
heidi klein now sells in over 150 stores in 39 countries globally but remains an independent brand that evolves each season with chic and elegant designs for the well-travelled client. The company has earned a continued celebrity following including Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Jennifer Anniston. In 2014, heidi klein launched a range inspired by Rosewood Little Dix Bay and its tropical setting on the shores of Virgin Gorda.
What is your favorite island indulgence?
HG: Walking on the beach in the morning and watching the pelicans diving for their breakfast is the most simple yet most indulgent treat.
PK: Taking a normal daily routine and turning it into something memorable – being served morning coffee on the beach was such a small but genuine pleasure. On a cold winter’s day in London, I dream about starting the day this way.
Do you have a favorite water activity?
HG: Snorkeling with the sea turtles! They play in the bay and it’s such an incredible experience to be able to grab a snorkel and swim beside them. I could follow them for hours.
PK: The sea turtles are definitely Virgin Gorda’s hidden treasure. It’s a joy to be able to swim alongside them and the waters are crystal clear.
What’s your favorite beach on Virgin Gorda?
PK: It’s hard to choose just one beach but Savannah Bay was my favorite – such a beautiful tranquil retreat.
HG: It has to be the Little Dix Bay beach – it’s one of the most picturesque beaches in the world. It really is perfect – you can completely understand why Laurence Rockefeller was so taken by Virgin Gorda.
What’s your favorite island drink?
PK: The fresh juices on the island are wonderful but everyone needs to try at least one Rum and Ting (a popular Caribbean soft drink) – it’s something of an island tradition.
What is your favorite workout activity on Virgin Gorda?
HG: Paddle boarding – great for helping to achieve that perfect beach body!
PK: A hike up Gorda Peak is probably the best workout on Virgin Gorda but a stroll up to the Sense spa at Rosewood Little Dix Bay can be equally as rewarding as the views are spectacular.
Can you recall your favorite day trip?
PK: The Baths are truly unique – nowhere else on earth has these huge boulders and fine white sands. The grottoes make for wonderful snorkeling and the trail through to Devil’s Bay is great fun. It’s best to go early in the morning or late afternoon when there are less visitors so you can have the place to yourself.
HG: Island hopping around Virgin Gorda on the gorgeous La Boheme boat. There’s so much natural beauty to see.
How do you like to end the day when you’re on Virgin Gorda?
HG: Dinner at Cocomaya, a wonderful local restaurant that is the definition of beach chic.
PK: Simply watching the sun set over a cocktail or two.
What are your tips and tricks for dressing beach chic?
PK: The secret to a great bikini is hidden support.
HG: Always be confident in what you’re wearing, if you feel great you will look gorgeous.
What is your go-to beach outfit?
HG: A classic nautical inspired triangle bikini and rope tie-side bottom is a must.
PK: A heidi klein U-Bar one piece and an oversized white shirt. I also swear by a wide brim raffia hat to protect my face from harmful rays. It’s probably my most important beach essential and I’ll wear it all day when relaxing by the sea.
