Five Beach Escapes You’ve Never Heard Of

We asked five sun-seeking insiders to share their favorite off-the-beaten-path places for sticking toes in sand.

For Couples: Drew’s Bay, Bermuda

For a romantic getaway on her native island, Bermudian Nicole Golden suggests the tiny and “secluded” Drew’s Bay (sometimes spelled Dreu’s). The owner of popular Front Street store Urban Cottage likes its idyllic, remote location on the island’s undeveloped northeast shore, just outside the town of St. George’s. Surrounded by lush greenery, steps built into a rocky cliff descend to the intimate beach’s pink sands. Golden loves its privacy—and heads there for picnics for two.

For Wildlife: Playa Los Arbolitos, Los Cabos, Mexico

Chef Guillermo Tellez spends the majority of his days turning out farm-fresh cuisine at epicurean mecca Flora Farms (where Rosewood Curator James Perse loves to eat). But when he wants to disconnect, he brings his family to Playa Los Arbolitos, two hours north of Los Cabos on the Sea of Cortez. “It’s located within Cabo Pulmo National Park, and it’s great for watersports, or just sitting around while the children play,” he says. “But it’s most famous for the diverse marine life.” Animals to spot offshore include several species of dolphin, sea turtles, and, during the winter, humpback, fin and Bryde’s whales. The nearby coral reef, accessible by kayak, is also home to hundreds of species of colorful fish and manta rays—perfect snorkeling terrain.

Where to Stay

For Doing Nothing: Cabbage Beach, Nassau, Bahamas

Beaches in Nassau can get busy, but one of the island’s most spacious and tranquil stretches of sand is actually at the well-known seaside hangout Cabbage Beach. “The key is to head east,” says Alanna Rodgers, local social entrepreneur and owner of Tru Bahamian Food Tours, who has been coming to the beach since childhood. Her advice: Enter from Ocean Club Drive and turn to the right, heading east. “After seven minutes or so, you come to the edge of the sand strip. The water, buffered by a natural lagoon, is shallow, calm and always crystal-clear, and the sand is white and powdery.” She goes during the summer with a friend and a plan of action: Eat mangoes in the ocean, take a leisurely walk, maybe snorkel the lagoon, and float in the sea. “For those few weightless moments, I feel the peace and serenity that can sometimes seem so very far away.”

For Families: Naiharn Beach, Phuket, Thailand

Tucked away between grassy hills and a quiet bay, Naiharn feels worlds away from the party vibe found on Phuket’s other public beaches. That’s why locals like Kitipong Ngosiri—the talented young artist behind Phuket’s Love Art Studio—flock to it. “I love Naiharn because it’s peaceful,” says Ngosiri, who scours the beach at low tide for driftwood to use in his artworks. Families with young children will appreciate the calm, clear waters, and can rent kayaks or snorkeling gear for more exploration. At the southern end of the wide beach, groups of children—local and visiting—make fast friends, playing in a stream formed by waters from a lagoon joining the sea.

For Surfing: Ditch Plains, Montauk, New York

It’s no secret, but Ditch Plains is well worth the trek from Manhattan for surfers and their admirers—and a more laid-back vibe than the nearby Hamptons. So says Jesse Joeckel, a Montauk native and founder of clothier-cum-publisher Whalebone Creative. “No matter the swell direction, there’s always a place to catch a wave,” he says. An added bonus is the sheer beauty of the setting. “With a jetty and white-sand cove at one end and stunning cliffs on the other, it’s one of the most picturesque beaches around.”
