Rosewood Amsterdam reimagines a historic landmark with a contemporary perspective rooted in local culture, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. Tasked with creating an authentic and immersive experience that reflects Rosewood’s A Sense of Place® philosophy, renowned Dutch studio Studio Piet Boon, embraced the building’s layered past as the former Palace of Justice, translating it into a serene, refined, and emotionally resonant journey. Through thoughtful integration of monumental architecture, contemporary detailing, and residential intimacy, the hotel becomes a modern-day “mansion” along the canal, an expression of Amsterdam’s creative spirit, global curiosity, and quiet grandeur. The elegant design is complemented with bespoke art curation, consisting of over 1,000 artworks carefully selected and placed by Kunstmest Consulting. With each space uniquely composed and connected through a shared design language, Rosewood Amsterdam invites guests into a world that is both distinctly local and beautifully international.
Entering Rosewood Amsterdam is the beginning of a sensory journey where history and modernity blend seamlessly, our collaboration with Studio Piet Boon, Piet Oudolf, Sagrada and Kunstmest Consulting allows us to present an elevated interpretation of Dutch art and design that is rooted in authenticity, purpose, and the spirit of place.

A Design Vision by Studio Piet Boon
Rosewood Amsterdam is a holistic work of art - or "Gesamtkunstwerk" - where every material, finish, and object is chosen to invite both comfort and discovery. The interiors are a contemporary interpretation of the building's layered history, once the city’s Palace of Justice, now reimagined as a sanctuary of elegance and connection.
The use of natural materials, from oakwood paneling and bronze accents to honed and rough-finished stone, grounds the property in authenticity. 19th-century elements, like granite columns and ornate door frames, were preserved using traditional techniques, while playful nods to the building's judicial past appear in pleated headboards inspired by judge's collars.
Subtle shifts in tone, texture, and proportion echo the Dutch skies, creating a flow that connects each room to the next. Furnishings curated from local artisans and global makers act as small exhibitions, enriching every guest’s stay.
Stepping into Rosewood Amsterdam feels like discovering a hidden gem within the city’s heart. Each detail invites guests to feel at home, immersed in a journey that flows from the timeless beauty of the 17th century to a fresh, contemporary Dutch design perspective.

A Curated Journey Through Art
Rosewood Amsterdam is home to an exceptional collection of nearly 1,000 artworks, curated to offer guests a narrative of Amsterdam's cultural soul. From Frank Stella's bold 1970s wooden reliefs to Maarten Baas' whimsical Grandmother Clock, a monumental photograph by Viviane Sassen, and Casper Braat's Art Vending Machine, every piece is designed to surprise and delight.
Commissioned in collaboration with Kunstmest Consulting, the collection spans four themes:
- Innovative Media: Featuring a digital art screen co-curated with Nxt Museum and works in new and innovative media
- Urban Art: Rooted in graffiti and street art, reflecting Amsterdam's vibrant city life
- Re-Masters: Dutch masters reinterpreted by contemporary artists
- Next Generation Talent: Showcasing bold voices shaping the city's future
Each area of the hotel, including guest rooms and houses features bespoke pieces that connect visitors to the layered history of the location, reinforcing Rosewood's A Sense of Place® philosophy.
Curating a bespoke art collection for Rosewood Amsterdam was not about filling walls. It's about sharing a layered story of Amsterdam, its history, present and future. Each artwork, often specifically created for Rosewood, reflects on the many cultures and essence of the city and its creative talent. The art collection of Rosewood Amsterdam provides guests with an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate the rich creativity of the community and captivate, inspire, and connect guests with the city’s unique identity.

An Enticing Welcome
Guests are welcomed by a softened, arched entrance that transforms the building’s stern historic façade into a warm, inviting threshold. Pillar, a bespoke art piece by Levi van Veluw, serves as a sculptural light guide visitors toward the grand lobby, where the transformation of the former Palace of Justice begins to unfold. Inside, the original flooring leads guests through the central nave, creating a natural flow into the heart of the hotel. Inspired by the Gallery of Honour at the Rijksmuseum, a digital artwork appears in the distance - created in collaboration with the Nxt Museum - drawing the eye forward.
Spacious lounge areas on either side - framed in glass and bathed in natural light - serve as contemporary conservatories overlooking the courtyard gardens. Mirrored seating arrangements seamlessly connect the interior with the exterior, allowing the courtyard to feel like an open-air extension of the lobby. A newly added, library-like reception space offers privacy and calm, enhancing the sense of ease and quiet refinement that defines the Rosewood experience. Throughout, a subdued color palette, symmetrical architecture, and layered design elements evoke a harmonious blend of history, craftsmanship, and modern elegance.
Blissful Indulgence: Asaya Spa
Drawn by the sound of trickling water, guests descend a softly lit staircase into the tranquil sanctuary of the hotel’s spa. Rooted in yin-yang philosophy, the design balances clean lines and rounded forms, enhanced by light and sculptural elements. A muted palette of light tones defines the pool and shared areas, while the treatment rooms transition to darker hues, creating a cocoon-like intimacy. Marble sinks, niches, and consoles provide quiet elegance throughout. Natural daylight filters through ceiling vents from the courtyard above, subtly shifting the ambiance as the day progresses, and guiding guests through a calming progression of space and tone. The experience of Asaya Spa is further enhanced by two meditative video works by Jaehun Park and a painting referencing the flow of water by Janine van Oene.
The Grand Library
Located on the first floor, the Grand Library is a generous yet intimate space that blends historical richness with contemporary elegance. Once the courtroom in the Palace of Justice, guests are now welcomed by a striking antique grand piano - an invitation to creativity that sets the tone for the room’s design. The space features modern interpretations of period lighting, decorative accents, and artworks that evoke a sense of global curiosity.
Dark hues of blue, brown, and green create a warm, enveloping atmosphere, while touches of silver and gold patina add energy and depth. A focal point in the room is a ceiling high textile artwork by Patience.studio featuring the hidden sketch layer of Rembrandt’s Nightwatch. Referencing its former function, Alex van Warmerdam executed a stern-looking portrait of a fictional judge. The work is mirrored by a fierce woman painted in thick layers by Raquel van Haver. A dramatic bespoke light installation lowers the scale of the soaring ceilings and subtly divides the space for formal functions. With its layered design and thoughtful detailing, the Grand Library also serves as an exclusive living area for guests in the adjoining Canal Suite.
De Tuin: A Reflective Garden Space by Piet Oudolf
Designed by celebrated Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf, De Tuin brings a vision of biodiversity and indigenous flora to life, seamlessly merging nature with the vibrancy of urban Amsterdam. This living canvas holds deep personal significance for Oudolf, embodying his philosophy of embracing the present moment.
A transformative space that redefines the concept of gardens, De Tuin invites visitors to experience nature as a dynamic art form. Here, aesthetics and sustainability come together, offering encounters with elements of the natural world that might be found nowhere else.
Each season within this sanctuary unfolds as a source of inspiration, offering moments to reconnect with both nature and oneself.
De Tuin is a living, evolving canvas. Each season will reveal something new, allowing visitors to experience the subtle transformations of nature, from the play of light on the Japanese maple to the resilience of perennials in shade and sun

A Celebration of Flavor and Form
In collaboration with interior design studio Sagrada, two distinctive food and beverage experiences are carefully curated to honor the building’s heritage while infusing it with a contemporary spirit. Through thoughtful materiality, intricate detailing, and a bold exploration of color and form, these interiors stand as a tribute to the timeless character of Amsterdam - a city that continuously balances its rich past with an ever-evolving future.
Inspired by the city’s enduring relationship with nature, Rosewood Amsterdam’s À la carte restaurant Eeuwen is conceived as a seamless marriage of classic brasserie elegance and a lush, botanical aesthetic. The interiors are rich with cascading foliage, delicate floral patterns, and organic textures that celebrate the Netherlands’ horticultural heritage. Soft, natural materials such as warm oak, linen draperies, and hand-crafted ceramics establish a tactile connection to nature, while punctuations of bold, vibrant color introduce a contemporary energy reflective of Amsterdam’s modern dynamism.
Eeuwen is a gastronomic almanac, meticulously crafted to synchronize with the rhythms of nature. Each dish is a celebration of the seasons, offering a taste of the times—a harmonious ode to the moments to plant, harvest, fish, and feast.
David Ordoñez, Chef de Cuisine
In contrast, the signature bar Advocatuur, embodies a daring, modernist spirit. Inspired by the rich, moody hues of Dutch Golden Age paintings, the interiors feature a curated palette of deep blues, opulent reds, and warm amber tones. These hues extend across bespoke rugs, textured walls, and eclectic furniture. Timber flooring enhances the tactile experience, grounding the space in enduring craftsmanship. At the heart, an Anglo-Japanese-inspired fractured bar becomes a sculptural focal point - symbolizing the dynamic pulse of modern Amsterdam, where historic reverence meets progressive design. Designed as a space of discovery, the bar reveals intimate corners, hidden moments, and eclectic arrangements that invite exploration. Adding o its sense of character, portraits by Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn capturing iconic figures such as Candy Dulfer, Herman Brood and Kate Bush line the walls, infusing the space with cultural depth and artistic edge.
Honoring storied heritage and the practice of law, Advocatuur challenges the status quo by blending formalities with the spirit of rebellion, giving people a new reason to enter the former Palace of Justice. We want Advocatuur to be the embodiment of cocktail culture, enable our guests to savor exquisite mixology, and provoke their tastebuds with our in-house distilled jenever.
Yann Bouvignies, Director of Bars & Beverage, Advocatuur and Rosewood Amsterdam
