Rosewood Phuket Achieves LEED Gold Certification

In recognition of its eco-friendly philosophy and green initiatives, Rosewood Phuket was recently awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification.

Released 17 October 2018

Since the late 1990s, LEED has been the globally recognized assessment system for building sustainability, with Gold being one of the top levels of certification possible to achieve.

“We are proud and honored to be recognized with the Gold LEED Certificate,” “When we built the property, we were not thinking about how we could win ‘green’ awards, but instead were focused on how we, as a hotel, could contribute to our planet.”

Rosewood Regional Vice President and Managing DirectorAndrew Turner

In awarding the Gold certification, LEED recognized many aspects of Rosewood Phuket's green efforts, such as controlling erosion through bio swales and water retention ponds that help protect the ocean and marine life from storm water runoff. In tandem, the resort was praised for its water efficiency through collecting rain water and using water-efficient fixtures and plant irrigation.

Since buildings can contribute to raising the temperature of their surroundings by absorbing the sun’s energy and radiating that heat back into the environment, Rosewood Phuket reduces this impact by shading buggy paths, having green roofs with growing plants and using porous pavement.

Energy-saving is one of the most significant ways to help protect the environment and Rosewood Phuket conserves energy through use of a solar photovoltaic system that generates electricity on site; windows that are energy-efficient; effective wall and roof insulation; energy-efficient LED lighting; and solar hot water panels that use the sun’s heat to make hot water.

As part of its all-round green approach, Rosewood Phuket collects and separates recyclables to reduce refuse and lessen the impact of single use items. It repurposes wood from old houses, concrete test cylinders and concrete piles as pavers, and excess concrete is reused in coral reef domes. The indoor environment is also improved with increased fresh air circulation and air filtration to remove dust, contaminants and pollen. Access to daylight and views also helps improve guests’ health and wellness.

Rosewood Phuket is also recognized as an innovator in the generation of food produced on the property, capitalizing on the harvests from herb and vegetable gardens. Finally, the resort has taken special care to be sensitive to the local environment by protecting indigenous plant species and restoring jungle habitats for birds.

“We take sustainability very seriously,” says Turner. “Rosewood Phuket was built from a scratch with sustainability at the very forefront. From replacing plastic straws to nurturing our very owncoral reef site, I believe hospitality plays a big role in saving our planet one initiative at a time.”
