Rosewood Sanya’s Art Collection is an Inspirational Celebration of Nature’s Beauty

Rosewood Sanya, which opened August 2017 as the first mainland China resort for ultra-luxury Rosewood Hotels & Resorts®, offers an artistic journey of discovery that complements the stunning natural beauty that surrounds this exclusive sanctuary at Haitang Bay on Hainan Island. A specially commissioned collection of art installations – by turns whimsical, inspiring and serene – celebrates sea, sky and land, engages guests with a spirit of life as a living canvas.

The visual journey begins immediately upon arrival. The seven-meter-high abstract floral oil painting Sanya Floral I that greets guests was created by Argentina-based artist Carlos Arnaiz, who is renowned for his poetic representations of plant life. Opposite is South Korean artist Byun Dae-young’s charming Ice Cream Bear sculpture centerpiece, a harbinger of visitors’ delightful experiences to come. Artist Ding Hao from Wuhan spent an entire year working with bamboo and wood to craft the intriguing Tower of Babel work which also highlights the space.

Shu Hai, created by Guangzhou Academy Professor Qin Da Li, is a large rattan-woven book, which take pride of display behind the reception desk. The construction of this large tome showcases local weaving techniques at their finest. It is metaphoric memory book, symbolically ready to record beautiful experiences at Rosewood Sanya, which will become part of the legacy of guests’ special moments in this unique location.

Two abstract oil paintings by Australian artist Lara Merrett -- Streaming II and The Space in Between, Edition 1/5 -- are cleverly displayed at Sense, A Rosewood Spa. These vibrant pieces exhibit an exploration into the possibilities of the abstract and a total enjoyment of the present moment -- emotions perfectly attuned to the mindset of an incoming spa guest.

Sea vistas are never far from view at Rosewood Sanya – even all guestrooms are ocean-facing – and selected art pieces reinforce this inspiring connection. The giant Whale Tail #7 by American artist Thomas Givens, appears as though this giant of the sea is “diving” between the 14th floor reception area and elevator foyer. Similarly, references to Sanya’s lush tropical landscape are omnipresent, including Vermeer Half, the sculpture of a deer at the Private Kitchen social and dining space on the 14th floor. It has been cunningly created from tapestry and recycled materials by the French artist Frederique Morrel to appear as though it has been surprised in the midst of wandering through a tropical forest.

The Explorer by South Korean artist Byun Kyung-soo adorns HAI, the infinity pool bar on the 13th floor. This two-meter-high human-shaped sculpture with diving mask represents the bravery of the human spirit, ready to explore the deep sea unknown. Octopus and Fish, made of steel wire, steel sheet, silver solder and gold flakes, is the masterpiece of American artist Thomas Hill, displayed in East Kitchen.

Even in the luxuriant gardens and pathways surrounding Rosewood Sanya, guests are charmed when they happen upon the Mountain Series sculptures created by Chinese artist Huang Zhi Yang, which visually reinforce the harmony between walkers and the environment of colorful flowers and foliage.
