BIO: Managing Director Guillermo Varela

At age 34, Guillermo Varela, managing director of Rosewood Luang Prabang, is the youngest managing director in the history of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts®, yet this native Costa Rican has more than 15 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, including seven years in Asia Pacific.

Before joining Rosewood, Guillermo worked with Aman Resorts as an area executive assistant manager for its two Sri Lanka properties, Amangalla and Amanwella, and in the same position for the brand’s hotel and residences in Greece, Amanzoe.  He began his relationship with Aman in Bali by immersion into its Amanusa, Amankila and Amandari resorts.

Previously, Guillermo spent four years in Indonesia expanding his food and beverage management experience at pre-opening and operating properties within the Alila Hotels and Resorts group. Food and beverage were also the focus of Guillermo's earlier projects, which included conceptualization of dining and bars for Four Seasons Koh Samui and W Hotel in Barcelona.

Before coming to Asia, Guillermo lived in Europe for several years, starting out his career as a chef.  He worked in acclaimed restaurants in Spain, including three Michelin Star elBulli, recognized as perhaps the world’s finest restaurant; one Michelin Star Koldo Royo; Michelin Guide-noted Biniaran; and one Michelin Star Es Fum in the St. Regis hotel in Mallorca, Spain.

Guillermo holds a certificate in Marketing Mix from Cornell University and a diploma in Culinary Arts, Economics, and Gastronomy from Le Cordon Bleu School in Madrid.

Guillermo’s favorite motto comes from self-development guru Brian Tracy:  "The best leaders have high consideration factor. They really care about their people.” He strives to put this sentiment to action in all of his leadership roles.  When he is not at his professional helm, he loves traveling, fine food and beverage, architecture and cultural activities.  With passion driving every stage of his career, he now resides in Luang Prabang, where he continues his journey of discovery and achievement at Rosewood.
