Help set up Cambodia’s next generation for success
A remarkable philanthropic journey accompanying John Wood, founder of Room to Read and Rosewood Curator, and Phlouen Prim, executive director of Cambodian Living Arts, on missions to improve child literacy and preserve traditional culture and art.
Sometimes, giving is the greatest reward. Rosewood Phnom Penh’s three-part package offers the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of Cambodian children and support Cambodia’s traditional performing arts, while connecting with local communities at a meaningful level.
Part one is a hands-on day with Room to Read, a leading charity that promotes literacy among children. Founder John Wood will lead a private visit to a Room to Read sponsored school outside Phnom Penh, where guests can speak to and learn from students and see first-hand how tomorrow’s generation benefit from the programme. There is also the option to sponsor a school library.
Cambodia’s tragic history – when up to 90 percent of artists lost their lives under the Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s – is central to the purpose of Cambodian Living Arts. The organisation works to preserve the country’s cultural heritage, and support the careers of promising artists. Gain insight into its work on a musical journey aboard the Khmer Magic Music Bus with executive director Phlouen Prim, as it spreads traditional music around the countryside. Guests can learn how to play the chapei (traditional guitar) or khim (a string instrument), and perform a Cambodian folk dance together with the community.
More hands-on learning comes in the form of a cooking class with Chef Rotanak, also known as Chef Nak, an authority on Khmer cooking. Guests will travel to her traditional Khmer wooden stilt home by the Mekong River, and discover the secrets of this little-known cuisine as she presents the culinary tradition of Cambodia. The best part? Feasting on delicious food among beautiful tropical gardens.
