On Display at Rosewood Phnom Penh, Heritage by Sothy Chhim is a Master Class in Blending Tradition with Transformation.

Recognized as one of Cambodia's most respected contemporary artists, Sothy Chhim graduated from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh. Over several decades, he has developed a distinctive artistic practice rooted in Khmer cultural heritage while embracing contemporary visual expression.​

Exploring the evolving relationship between memory, identity and cultural inheritance, Heritage reflects on how traditions are carried forward, transformed and reimagined across generations. Through a compelling body of work that bridges Khmer artistic traditions and contemporary expression, Sothy invites viewers to consider heritage not as a fixed relic of the past, but as a living and evolving force.​

For this exhibition, the artist incorporates painting alongside layered materials, including repurposed rice sacks from Côte d'Ivoire. These everyday objects, which have travelled across borders and histories before arriving in Cambodia, become an integral part of the artworks. Through visible stitching, textured surfaces and carefully constructed compositions, Sothy explores themes of continuity, repair, transformation and connection.​

"Heritage is not something that belongs only to the past," says Sothy Chhim. "It continues to live when we allow it to change and speak in a new language."​

The exhibition reflects the artist's long-standing engagement with Cambodian culture and visual traditions while introducing new materials and perspectives that challenge conventional interpretations of heritage. Throughout the collection, familiar Khmer references interact with diverse textures and forms, creating a subtle dialogue between local and global histories.​

"I hope people will think about their own relationship with heritage," Sothy explains. "What they preserve, what they change and what they choose to carry forward."​
