RLH Properties Finalized The Installation Phase For Mayakoba’s Sargassum Eco-Friendly Barrier

Eco-Destination comprised of Andaz, Banyan Tree, Fairmont and Rosewood Hotels has completed the installation phase for a new sargassum barrier that will contribute to maintain its mile-long pristine beach in perfect conditions

Released 1 December 2019

Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, Mexico – Mayakoba, a destination synonymous with sustainability in the Riviera Maya, reaffirms its compromise with maintaining and improving the balance in the ecosystems and beach within its 620-acres of tropical forest and mile-long Caribbean coastline.

Sargassum is a microalgae that floats to Caribbean coastline all the way from north of Brazil due to excessive proliferation during spring and summer seasons. To keep the influx of sargassum RLH Properties and Mayakoba Resort have joined efforts with the installation of a new FLEXPRIN Beach Guard barrier to divert the floating algae and push –with the help of an 18 feet specialty design boat– to strategic recovering areas.

In addition to continuous hand cleaning of the shore of our precious beach, this has contributed to guarantee that our guests and residents always enjoy of pristine and sargassum free beaches. This action holds the quality of the guest experience as our highest priority demonstrating that luxury travel can go hand in hand with environmental sustainability since the barrier completely complies with established regulations which require responsibly and eco-friendly solutions to the sargassum control. Mayakoba has taken environmental stewardship to the next level with this measure and implemented a comprehensive solution with three principles in mind: divert, recover and re-use. Sargassum waste is crushed, compacted and delivered to nearby regulated extraction plants being turned into pharmaceutical, textile and agricultural supplies.

The installation of the barrier and the special equipment took place during October and was completed in early November, leaving Mayakoba beaches prepared with the best comprehensive and sustainable solution to sargassum surplus management for seasons to come.
