Rosewood Mayakoba Launches Authentic Line of Mezcal Line Inspired by Local Growers For Guests
Resort enlists local mezcaleros to introduce traditional agave spirits to travelers
Riviera Maya, Mexico – Rosewood Mayakoba, the award-winning resort nestled in the lush enclave of the Riviera Maya, has partnered with Mezonte, a non-profit organization that supports and preserves the production of traditional agave spirits in Mexico, to introduce a selection of native, mezcal-inspired amenities to guests. Provided in room upon check-in, guests will receive a regional “mezcal” – also known as raicilla and tuxca, among other names – reflecting the community in which it was created, along with details about its history, cultivation and importance to the region. Unavailable commercially, each offering is handmade by a master distiller in the spirit’s traditional form, using recipes passed down for generations.
“These time-honored mezcales reflect the hard work and union of the families involved in their cultivation, and we are humbled to share their rich history and narrative with our guests,” “We want every guest to have the opportunity to taste and savor each spirit, and to leave Rosewood Mayakoba with a better understanding of its heritage and importance to their local community.”
Daniel Scott, Managing Director of Rosewood Mayakoba
As part of the new program, Rosewood Mayakoba is featuring the products of five master mezcaleros from the surrounding regions, including Hildegardo “Japo” Joya of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco; Santos Juarez of Tolimán, Jalisco; Macario Partida of Zapotitlán de Vadillo, Jalisco; Emilio “Pechuga” Vieyra of Bonito, Michoacán; and Lorenzo Virgen of Chancuellas, Jalisco. Each artisan’s unique perspective of distilling agave is emphasized, highlighting their hands-on approach to the craft.
In keeping with Rosewood Mayakoba’s philosophy of delivering immersive, locally-relevant programs and amenities, guests can learn about the history of each master mezcalero and the process and importance of mezcal production to the region. In addition, travelers are provided with all the ingredients needed to mix their own, locally-inspired agave cocktail, from a Carajito featuring espresso coffee, sugar and cinnamon to a Jalisco Tonic complete with grapefruit juice, tonic water and brown sugar.
