Rosewood Mayakoba Named One of Rosewood Hotel Group’s Impact Trailblazers
One of Six Properties Recognized by the Group as a Leader in Sustainability and Social Impact, Rosewood Mayakoba is Helping to Shape the Future of Hospitality
Rosewood Mayakoba is honored to announce that it has been named an Impact Trailblazer, a distinction delivered by Rosewood Hotel Group in recognition of the property’s impressive sustainability and social responsibility successes and ambitions. Together with five other Impact Trailblazers, Rosewood Mayakoba is leading the charge towards creating a future where people and place enrich one another, and subsequently setting a higher standard for their sister properties as well as the hospitality industry at large.
Rosewood Mayakoba’s role as an Impact Trailblazer is most clearly seen via its work with Centro Educativo K’iin Beh, a non-profit bilingual school in the Cristo Rey community of Playa del Carmen. With a mission to support not only the hotel employees who need high quality schooling for their children but also the larger community, the resort’s leaders raised the resources required to reopen the school in 2017, after several challenges threatened its ongoing operations and forced it to temporarily shut its doors. Today, the school welcomes over 500 students, all of whom receive economic support for tuition and supplies funded by Rosewood Mayakoba guests and leadership. Guests are also brought into the journey through a special volunteer and sponsorship program, “Padrino,” that ensures the continued development of the students.
In Fall 2022, guests’ donations contributed to the development and launch of the institution’s new high school, allowing local youth to continue their education. K’iin Beh is honored to celebrate its first graduating class in Spring 2024. K’iin Beh represents one of the most meaningful long-term community investments that any property within Rosewood Hotel Group has made to this day and is foundational to Rosewood Mayakoba’s current status and future vision as an Impacts Trailblazer.
Rosewood Mayakoba is also committed to empowering local businesses and purveyors across the country with a focus on shining a light on Mexican talent. The resort’s beloved turndown amenity, colorful alebrije figurines, are hand-carved in Oaxaca by a family of artisans. Rosewood Mayakoba’s partnership has allowed the family to expand their workshop and employ additional craftspeople – offering economic opportunity within the community – and, importantly, to maintain this cherished tradition of alebrije craftsmanship.
Another highlight of the resort experience that directly supports Mexican talent is Rosewood Mayakoba’s annual Yo Amo Mexico festival, which just wrapped its fourth iteration in March. A three-month long series of events underscoring the magic and spirit of Mexico through special guest appearances and showcases, Yo Amo Mexico immerses visitors in the country’s rich cultural heritage in a joyful, relaxed atmosphere. Demonstrating the resort’s holistic approach to Impacts, fundraising efforts throughout the festival support the continued development and needs of Centro Educativo K’iin Beh. This year, Yo Amo Mexico raised an impressive $53,100 USD for the school.
From a sustainability standpoint, Rosewood Mayakoba is a prime model of how sustainable design and execution can be thoughtfully woven together to create a truly luxurious destination. Sitting within a 620-acre private development, the resort revolves around the protection of natural mangroves and is home to hundreds of indigenous flora and fauna species. Guests arrive at their suite via an electric boat and use electric golf carts and bicycles throughout their stay. Rosewood Mayakoba is an active champion of Come Pesca, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of sustainable seafood and fishing practices. As a longtime ambassador of the program, executive chef Edgar Chavez has helped coordinate and expand the resort’s annual Amigos del Mar event, which highlights the importance of sustainable sourcing to maintain the delicate balance of our oceans and guarantee the availability of fish populations for future generations.
The recognition of Rosewood Mayakoba as an Impact Trailblazer comes less than a year after the public debut of Rosewood Impacts, the brand’s sustainability and social impact roadmap. With tangible goals in the fields of sustainability, employment, partnerships and more, the comprehensive roadmap champions consequential policies and programming under two distinct pillars: Rosewood Empowers, which encapsutes the group’s belief that equal access to opportunity is the key to uplifting communities; and Rosewood Sustains, which showcases a commitment to growing Rosewood’s lifestyle ecosystem responsibly and protecting the environment for future generations.
