The Particles: An Odyssey Through Culture, Nature, and Nation at Rosewood Phnom Penh Art Gallery

Rith Bonrotanak portrays a distinctive artistic style known as Particlization, blending colorful, imaginative designs with Khmer sensibilities through meticulously hand-drawn images. His creations transform everyday objects and iconic cultural symbols into intricate, layered compositions that invite viewers to explore the hidden beauty and rich histories of each piece.

A graduate of the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) in Architecture and Urbanization, Bonrotanak has also gained international recognition as an actor, demonstrating his diverse talents. He won the Short Film Jury Award in International Fiction at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival for the film "Grandma Nai Who Played Favorites."

After launching his first solo exhibition in 2024, he quickly established himself as a rising creative voice in Cambodia and was featured in Prestige Magazine. That same year, he participated in the group exhibition "A Circle of Life" at the Villa Gallery. To date, he has earned numerous accolades, including first place in the Digital Art category at the prestigious Ekarieach Multi-Art Competition in January 2025 and second place at the Color Outside the Lines competition at Sosoro Art Gallery. Recently, he debuted a mixed-media digital artwork reflecting Khmer culture and proverbs at the "On Being a Woman" group exhibition.

Bonrotanak now presents his second solo exhibition, "The Particles: Odyssey", at Rosewood Phnom Penh. Showcasing his signature style, he features 49 digital artworks that fuse traditional Khmer motifs with contemporary digital techniques, which are printed on premium art paper canvas and hand-finished with gold leaf, neon paint, and acrylic pour techniques, creating a rich, multi-sensory experience.

“Each piece in this collection is a reflection of my quiet moments of self-discovery,” says Bonrotanak. “Inspired by ancient sculptures in Siem Reap, I wanted to reinterpret objects of cultural reverence—statues, floral patterns, and religious symbols—with vibrant colors and textures, while preserving their spiritual calmness and timeless presence.”

The exhibition conveys themes linked to nature, cultural heritage, and national identity through three distinct series: "Enchantment" brings to life surreal floral forms inspired by Khmer 'Kbach' patterns and cultural symbolism; "Grace" explores the elegance of Apsara dancers and their symbolic hand gestures; and "The Idol" focuses on revered statues found across Cambodia, representing spiritual and cultural icons that are sources of inspiration.

"The Particles" exhibition is open until October 10, 2025, at Rosewood Phnom Penh Art Gallery, located on the 35th floor. Admission is free, and all artworks are available for purchase.
