Rewind 70 years, and a youth movement was gathering pace across Amsterdam that would help define the city’s enduring identity. Named after the provocative images that often featured within their protests, the collective known as Provo combined humour, protest and radical ideas to push back against authority and hold a mirror to Dutch society, with their effervescent energy changing the spirit of the city and sparking a freer Amsterdam that still flourishes today.
The group’s lasting legacy can also be found at the Rosewood Amsterdam, where Master Distiller Alex Davis has created an in-house Jenever named in their honour. A juniper-scented spirit and ancestor of modern gin, jenever is part of an age-old city tradition, with Provo the result of three distinct distillation methods, traditional and modern, and botanicals that include ginger, tulsi, citrus, rose and milk oolong tea
All of which adds layers of intrigue to a visit to Advocatuur, our intimate speakeasy bar that reimagines mixology through the lens of history and bold innovation. Here, Provo finds itself part of a sophisticated list of libations sure to fuel the conversations that – many years after its namesake rebellion emerged – keep Amsterdam’s creative flame alive.
