Checking into Rosewood Amsterdam is all the more memorable thanks to the presence of a striking sculpture by Dutch artist and designer Frederik Molenschot. Comprising two large installations created from hundreds of aluminum elements that resemble the human form, S TATI CA is an impressive artwork that – doubling as the concierge desk – pairs both form and function.
"If you're an architect, your world is a building; a graphic designer works on a page or wall; a landscape architect shapes the environment itself,” says Molenschot, who, after studying in Eindhoven’s Design Academy, has operated as Studio Molen since 2005. “I merge all these worlds and explore the potential that arises when they collide."
Arriving in Amsterdam via an appearance at Art Basel Hong Kong, S TATI CA is the latest high-profile piece by Studio Molen, with each of its small components created in a workspace in Zaandam before the sculpture was assembled on site. With a history of craftsmanship within the family, Molenschot was exposed to materiality at a young age, helping determine his creative direction. Aluminum has become a favourite medium for the artist, lending his large-scale pieces strength and elegance, with S TATI CA’s bold presence sure to draw admiring looks from all those arriving at Rosewood Amsterdam.
