In keeping with Rosewood Amsterdam’s celebration of Dutch excellence, the hotel’s landscaping was led by world-renowned landscape designer Piet Oudolf. His largest contribution is de Tuin, a serene courtyard garden that revives the property’s historical heart with a renewed sense of openness and calm. Renowned for creating natural landscapes that are beautiful all year round, such as his designs for New York’s Highline and Battery Park and Chicago’s Lurie Garden, Piet Oudolf shaped de Tuin around the unique setting of the hotel.
Built above the spa, the garden works with limited soil depth and follows the path of the sun from North to South. The result is a peaceful space filled with shade-loving perennials, layered greens and purples, and gently curving paths that guide visitors through the space. At the center stands a majestic Japanese maple, chosen for its delicate leaves and beauty through every season.
“A garden is different every moment you enter it” Oudolf says. His approach is guided by a deep respect for the natural world and an understanding that beauty can be found in every stage of growth. This belief is at the heart of de Tuin. It is not only a place to look at, but a place to feel. Whether guests come to reflect, walk quietly, or simply enjoy a moment outdoors, the garden offers something personal to each visitor.
Like the rest of Rosewood Amsterdam, de Tuin reflects a deep respect for Dutch creativity and design. It is a living part of the hotel that grows and changes over time, offering a calm and natural space in the middle of the city.
