Rosewood Mayakoba Launches New Series of Shaman-Led Wellness Experiences and Reintroduces Its Signature Temezcal Ceremony
The Award-Winning Resort and Spa Celebrates the Mayan Equinox with Exclusive Experiences Focused on Rebirth and Renewal
Rivera Maya, Mexico (February, 2023) – Located on its own private island within the heart of ultra-luxury Mexican resort Rosewood Mayakoba, Sense®, A Rosewood Spa is pleased to launch a series of new wellness experiences in celebration of the upcoming Mayan Equinox on March 21. Most notably, the Forbes Five-Star Spa is reintroducing its signature Temezcal, a shaman-led, pre-Hispanic healing ceremony that takes place within an indigenous sweat lodge and represents the process of transformation.
In pre-Hispanic culture, the springtime Mayan Equinox recalled a time when one could transcend their own physical limitations to reach an evolved, transitional state. It signified new beginnings and renewal, and offered a time to start new projects, shed anything that no longer served a purpose, and find balance.
The resort’s onsite Temezcal embraces this rich Mayan history. Its traditional rounded shape recalls the womb of Mother Earth, underscoring its mission to spark rebirth and internal evolution. Led by Rosewood Mayakoba’s resident shaman, the Temezcal is naturally heated with volcanic stones that are thoughtfully placed within the lodge. The shaman then pours aromatic water, scented with herbs and essential oils, over the hot stones to create steam and begin a detoxifying physical experience. The heat rises slowly, allowing the body to gradually adapt to the temperature. The ceremony includes singing of mantras, sensorial rituals, and moments of self-reflection that allow the guest to feel rooted and fully present in anticipation of their inner transformation.
“We recommend the Temezcal for those looking to take on a new challenge in their lives and who are open to a spiritual, life-changing experience,” “The core purpose of the Temezcal is to be reborn. Therefore, the experience will be most impactful for those looking to move into the next chapter in their lives and evolve. It’s a much more emotionally involved wellness experience and requires real introspection and work on behalf of the guest.”

In the spirit of the Mayan Equinox, the spa is also debuting a new Copal & Cacao Gratitude Ceremony. Led by the resort’s resident shaman, this Mayan-inspired wellness experience pays homage to the Equinox’s focus on balance, incorporating ceremonial drums, meditation, and heart-opening rituals designed to clear the mind and express gratitude.
Lastly, guests can commemorate the Mayan Equinox by partaking in the spa’s hyper-personalized Cenote Healing Retreat. This multi-day journey harnesses the spiritual energy and power of the Yucatan’s cenotes, which were long considered sacred waters by the Mayans. Tailored around the individual needs and desires of the guest, this experience includes exclusive off-site visits to two “secret” cenotes in which the guest completes their transformation with a cleansing plunge into the cenote’s crystalline waters.
