Rosewood London welcomes Zach Zono Artist Residency
Rosewood London presents a new artist residency with London-based painter Zach Zono (b.1999, Cape Town, South Africa), unveiling a new body of work titled Where the Light Stays. As part of The Living Gallery, the hotel’s rotating artist residency programme, the series continues to spotlight a dynamic roster of emerging contemporary artists connected to the city of London.
Born and raised in Cape Town, Zono’s practice is rooted in memory and internal experience, with works that unfold as meditative landscapes tracing the passage of time. Now based in London, his paintings reflect a dialogue between the openness of his South African upbringing and the rhythm of city life, capturing a movement between place, memory and identity. As the artist reflects, “the paintings are me moving through those spaces and trying to find a balance between them”.
This residency is part of The Living Gallery, Rosewood London's commitment to championing emerging artists and celebrating contemporary creativity through rotating exhibitions across the hotel’s historic spaces.
“Supporting emerging creatives is central to Rosewood London’s cultural vision, and The Living Gallery provides a platform for contemporary artists to connect with new audiences in a meaningful way. We are delighted to welcome Zach Zono, whose work offers a compelling exploration of memory and identity, enriching the hotel’s evolving cultural dialogue.”

MATERIAL & MOVEMENT
Painting for Zono is both physical and intuitive with gestures of stretching, scraping and reworking the canvas, forming a performative process. The result is a series of layered, instinctive compositions that echo the fluidity of thought and memory.
This sensibility extends to Zono’s poetic titles, drawn from the cadence of language encountered when returning home. Phrases such as ‘see you soon soon, now now’ introduce rhythm and repetition, offering a subtle entry point into each work.
Zono has exhibited internationally, with solo shows from London and Madrid to Mexico City and Bangkok, alongside group exhibitions in New York, Copenhagen and Beijing.
Installed across the hotel’s iconic Grade-II listed marble staircase and key areas of the British manor house property, The Living Gallery residency invites guests and visitors to engage with Zono’s work in an immersive setting, further enriching the hotel’s dialogue between art, design and contemporary culture. The works are also available for purchase.

“Painting, for me, isn’t about capturing something, it’s about allowing something offbeat to happen - a constant dance between the work and me. My residency at Rosewood London brings together a selection of these moments, some created before and some shaped during my time in the space, where I’ve learned to let go of control.”
