Hānai Maile Lei Making Workshop

Traditional maile lei-making led by cultural practitioners, featuring hands-on instruction in the art of `u`u (vine stripping) and hilo (braiding) using maile grown on the slopes of Hualālai

Presented in partnership with Hawai`i Tourism Authority and Malipolipo, Kona Village welcomes guests to a complimentary 90-minute cultural experience celebrating the traditions and stewardship of maile. Participants will work together in small groups to create a shared lei while connecting with the stories, language, and cultural significance woven into this cherished Hawaiian practice.

Developed alongside Pūnana Leo o Waimea, a Hawaiian language immersion school, Hānai Maile is rooted in aloha `āina, enriched with `Ōlelo Hawaiʻi, and led by cultural practitioners from Malipolipo committed to carrying this tradition forward for future generations.
