Cultural Etiquette
Dress Modestly
When visiting temples and sacred sites, please cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering temple buildings.
Holy Sites & Temple Conduct
Maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor at temples and shrines. Follow local customs, avoid loud conversations, and refrain from touching religious objects unless invited to do so.
Language
Lao is the official language, though English is widely understood in tourist areas. Learning a few simple phrases, such as “Sabaidee” (hello) and “Khob chai” (thank you), is greatly appreciated.
Non-Verbal Communication
A gentle smile goes a long way. Avoid pointing with your feet, which is considered rude. Use your hands, with an open palm, when indicating directions or objects.
Greeting Customs
A common greeting is “Sabaidee” accompanied by a slight bow and both hands pressed together at chest level, similar to the “Namaste” gesture.
Monks & Alms Giving
In the early morning, monks walk through town collecting alms. If you wish to participate, please do so respectfully and quietly, dress modestly, and follow local guidance on appropriate behavior.
Photography
Always ask permission before taking photographs of people, especially monks and during religious ceremonies. In some contexts, photography may not be allowed.
Public Behaviour
Lao people are generally modest and reserved. Please avoid public displays of affection and loud or confrontational behavior.
Children
Do not unnecessarily touch children, and please do not take photographs of them without prior permission from a parent or guardian.
Hands & Feet
In accordance with regional Buddhist customs:
- The head is considered sacred; avoid touching anyone on the head.
- The feet are considered unclean; do not touch others with your feet, point your feet at people or religious images, step over people sitting on the floor, or place your feet higher than someone else’s head.
By following these guidelines, you help preserve the dignity of local traditions and ensure a respectful, enriching experience in one of the most beautiful and culturally rich destinations in the world.
