Café Carlyle is thrilled to welcome Alex Newell for a special engagement June 9-13, 2026, bringing their powerhouse voice and singular stage presence to the intimate Carlyle stage. A historic Tony Award winner, Newell made headlines for their breakout performance in the hit Broadway musical Shucked, where their show-stopping rendition of “Independently Owned” earned unanimous acclaim and quickly became one of the season’s most talked-about performances.
In addition to their Tony Award-winning turn in Shucked, Newell has received the Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Musical. They previously starred as the god Asaka in the Broadway revival of Once on This Island, a production nominated for nine Tony Awards and winner of Best Revival, which also earned Newell a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album. Beyond the stage, Newell has been recognized as a cultural force, named to Variety’s 2023 New Power of New York List and the TIME 100 Next, and honored as TIME’s Breakthrough of the Year, with a tribute written by Academy Award–winning actress Mary Steenburgen. They can most recently be seen on screen in Simple Favor 2, directed by Paul Feig.
