Santa Maria Novella’s history dates to 1221 when Dominican friars, arriving in Florence, built a monastery just outside the city’s gates and began to study and experiment the properties of the local herbs. Through this research, medicines, balms and ointments were originally created to keep the friars and other member of the community in good health. Through the years, the fame of the products developed by the friars spread to Russia, China and India which eventually led the pharmacy to open to the public. These same raw martials are used to this day and apothecary father’s artisanal procedures are still followed, yet Santa Maria Novella avails itself on the use of state-of-the art equipment and modern technology.
