Innovative program promotes eco-friendly principles and cultural appreciation
December 01, 2017
The recently opened Rosewood Phuket presents another first for the ultra-luxury Rosewood Hotels and Resorts® brand with the global launch of Rosewood Explorers, a children’s club concept designed to inspire creativity and social responsibility through fun and adventure. The dynamic new concept will roll out in all Rosewood hotels through 2018.
Through entertaining, hands-on experiences, Rosewood Explorers aims to introduce children to the many wonders of the natural world, teach the importance of contributing to the global environment, inspire appreciation for different cultures, and spark a lifelong passion for all that the planet has to offer. In keeping with the Rosewood Hotels & Resorts guiding philosophy of A Sense of Place®, the programming offered at each Rosewood location will tap into the destination’s local environment and heritage.
Complimentary for children ages three to eight years old staying at Rosewood Phuket, the launch program includes entertaining activities, from cultural arts and crafts and cooking lessons to the exploration of local ecosystems, which show how anyone, no matter their age, can contribute to the preservation of the global community.
"Rosewood Phuket, with its beautiful tropical forest and beachfront setting at Emerald Bay, is the perfect environment to introduce Rosewood Explorers, within the context of the resort’s focus on sustainability and conservation,” says Niamh O’Connell, Rosewood’s group vice president, guest experience and wellness."Creative activities are designed to instill appreciation for the surroundings and local Thai culture among our young explorers, so they discover the many ways we can live in harmony with people and nature through thoughtful living and shared eco-friendly lifestyle choices.”
Educational and fun-filled indoor and outdoor zones give children the opportunity to play, explore, learn and unleash their imaginations. Activities are divided into five themed experiences that have been customized at Rosewood Phuket to reflect the brand's A Sense of Place® philosophy, embracing the local culture and landscape.
Experience 1 - Eco-awareness
Sustainability and conservation lie at the very heart of Rosewood Phuket and a key element of Rosewood Explorers’ DNA is exploring the world through the lens of environmental responsibility. Hands-on learning experiences teach children how to make better choices to reduce long term negative impacts on the Earth. There is a strong focus on the surrounding habitats, from Andaman Sea marine life to tropical forest flora and fauna, including an eco-nature walk to discover all the hidden ways the resort helps protect its environment. Children are invited to scoop soil, plant seeds, pick herbs and learn all about the natural life that flourishes in the Explorers garden.
Experience 2 - Great Outdoors
An exciting outdoor space for children to explore, climb and play includes a large Andaman Sea wooden pirate ship with water features, a bamboo house with sand pit as well as an herb garden and worm farms. The wider resort grounds offer virtually unlimited guided exploration, including an outdoor adventure scavenger hunt to find indigenous flowers and trees and a nature hunt to identify different colors in the natural world. Children can relate to local wildlife by searching the resort to find the just-right materials to make a real bird feeder and scan for seashells while learning about Phuket’s fascinating sea life.
Experience 3 - Creativity
The Arts & Craft Studio is an indoor space dedicated to inspiring expression, creativity and experimentation, while at the same time building empathy for cultural differences. Children are introduced to the play-time activities of Thai youngsters, including making and flying traditional Thai Chula and Pakpao kites, preparing a Thai flower garland to give to their family members, batik painting and learning to weave colorful friendship bracelets on a traditional Thai loom from the Chiang Mai province.
Activities such as creating clay sea creatures modelled on those living in the Andaman Sea, crafting one-of-a-kind sea gel candles, potpourri-making from leaves collected from around the resort and spinning sculptures on the pottery wheel, help refine their motor skills and ability to identify colors and textures.
Cooking classes give children a firsthand experience in mixing, blending and creating with ingredients from the indigenous herb garden. They can go behind the scenes in a real hotel kitchen and even create a cartoon “tastebud superhero” to discover how their senses impact flavors.
Experience 4 - Indoor Fun
An indoor fun zone ignites imagination while children interact, play together and blow off steam. A variety of local play and cultural activities stimulates children’s innate curiosity to explore and experience objects and spaces. They can practice the Thai martial art Ram Thai and learn a Thai dance with music and traditional costumes; recycle paper and boxes to make their very own musical instruments to play the Phuket way; make their own puppets and stage their own puppet theatre; and play Thai percussion instruments to strum, pound, toot or rattle as loud as they like.
Experience 5 - Quiet Time
Balancing the excitement of stimulating activities and meeting new friends, the Quiet Zone is a space to read a Tales of Thailand book, enjoy group story time or watch a movie. Children can also earn how to be strong and calm with fun yoga incorporating their imagination, animated poses and animal sounds.
Young guests at the resort will receive a series of keepsakes, including colorful passports, journals and newsletters so their memories of their explorations live on past their stay. Rosewood Explorers grants parents the chance to switch off on their Thailand holiday, safe in the knowledge that their children are enjoying a valuable fun and educational experience. Family friendly services such as the Napping Nanny means adults can enjoy some alone time with the children safely tucked up in bed after a rewarding day at Rosewood Explorers.
