PRESS RELEASES
May 05, 2025
San Miguel de Allende, May 5, 2025 – Located in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, Rosewood San Miguel de Allende blends the elegance of contemporary luxury with the richness of Mexico’s colonial heritage. Recognized with Five Stars by Forbes Travel Guide, the hotel stands out not only for its architecture, gastronomy, and world-class hospitality, but also for its genuine commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
As part of its global commitment to sustainability and social impact, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts has developed Rosewood Impacts, an initiative that reaffirms the hotel group’s comprehensive commitment to communities and the planet. This strategy drives actions that promote equity in access to job opportunities, inclusion, education, and skills development, while also fostering practices focused on environmental regeneration, carbon neutrality, and waste elimination. With a sustainable and integrated vision, it aims to create a positive and lasting impact on both people and the environment. Through two pillars—Rosewood Empowers (focused on the brand’s commitment to equity in access to opportunities) and Rosewood Sustains (focused on environmental protection and the transition to circular hospitality)—the group reinforces its commitment to a more equitable, sustainable, and responsible industry.
Since its opening in 2011, Rosewood San Miguel de Allende has been a benchmark of luxury and authenticity, but it has also committed to operating in a respectful and conscious manner with its surrounding environment. Driven by a deep sense of purpose to inspire, enrich, and positively impact both people and the planet, the hotel has adopted a sustainability model that places circular hospitality at the heart of its operations, while also strengthening the development of the communities within its ecosystem.
Under the leadership of David Eduardo Mares Sierra, a Biotechnologist Engineer, Rosewood San Miguel de Allende operates with a sustainability vision that integrates science, innovation, and social awareness. This model harmoniously combines environmental care with the promotion of local talent and community strengthening, reaffirming that true luxury lies in creating shared value.
Rosewood Sustains
The environmental commitment of Rosewood San Miguel de Allende is reflected in tangible practices that transform its daily operations and provide direct benefits to the environment. One of the most significant is the implementation of a wastewater treatment plant, which allows the reuse of up to 50,000 liters daily for garden irrigation, thus contributing to the conservation of the natural surroundings. This measure is complemented by a water purification system, which has enabled the hotel to eliminate the use of single-use plastic bottles, offering high-quality drinking water in glass bottles, available to both guests and staff. Additionally, single-use plastics have been removed from room amenities, reaffirming the hotel’s commitment to completely eliminating such materials across all operations, including the kitchen, where the use of plastic containers such as bottles and materials like Hegapak is avoided. In terms of energy, the hotel has begun a process of migrating to an electrical infrastructure that progressively reduces the use of fossil fuels, and has optimized consumption by replacing equipment with more efficient models, with the goal of advancing towards a cleaner and more sustainable operation. In the laundry area, biodegradable detergents are used, minimizing the environmental impact on water resources and facilitating their treatment within the wastewater plant. Finally, the corporate VERDES initiative encourages guests to opt out of daily linen changes during their stay, thus promoting more responsible use of water and energy.
In the gastronomic field, the hotel also strengthens the local economy by prioritizing the selection of regional suppliers who offer fresh and ethically produced products. Restaurants such as Restaurante 1826, Tequila Bar 1826, Luna Rooftop, and Pirules Garden Kitchen operate with a sustainable vision, incorporating local and seasonal ingredients into their menus. Additionally, kitchen waste is collected and donated to a local farm to feed animals, contributing to a circular economy cycle. The hotel is also running a vertical gardening project using hydroponics, which will allow them to grow vegetables, generate compost, and supply their own kitchens with fresh products.
Rosewood Empowers
Rosewood San Miguel de Allende’s commitment to social well-being is as deep as its connection to the surrounding community. Through various initiatives, the hotel seeks to create a positive and lasting impact on individuals, promoting inclusion, development, and solidarity. The hotel promotes equity in access to employment opportunities through inclusion programs that provide jobs to people from vulnerable groups. These actions not only create new opportunities but also foster social integration and strengthen the community fabric. Additionally, the hotel provides continuous training to its employees, focusing on both their professional and personal development. Through talks and educational workshops, the growth of each team member is encouraged, ensuring an empowering work environment.
The commitment to social well-being extends beyond the hotel. Rosewood San Miguel de Allende supports various foundations and humanitarian organizations by donating bedding, towels, and other items, benefiting local entities such as the Red Cross, the Firefighters, the Don Diego Community Foundation, and Jóvenes Adelante, among others. These actions aim to improve the living conditions of those most in need, promoting hospitality with a human and compassionate purpose.
Recognitions and Standards that Endorse Sustainable Leadership
The sustainability efforts of Rosewood San Miguel de Allende have been supported by high-impact certifications such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), making it the first hotel group in Mexico to receive this distinction. It has also been recognized with other relevant accreditations such as Zero Waste, Hotel Sustainability Basics, and national certifications awarded by PROFEPA and SEMARNAT.
