Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi, Santa Fe’s leading boutique hotel, today announced the elimination of single-use plastic straws at its hotel and signature restaurant, The Anasazi Restaurant. To reduce its environmental footprint, the hotel will begin offering biodegradable, plant-based straws as a high-quality and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic straws. The decision to eliminate single-use plastic straws is the latest effort in a string of green initiatives that the hotel has enacted to promote positive environmental change.
Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi and The Anasazi Restaurant will begin serving all drinks with Agave-based straws produced by spirits company Código 1530 Corporation. Created from Agave fibers known as bagasse that remain as byproducts of the tequila production process, the Código 1530 Agave-Fiber Straws are FDA-approved and 100% bio-degradable. The high-quality Agave-based straws do not affect the flavors of beverages and hold their shape in both hot and cold drinks after extended periods of time, unlike paper straws. Código 1530 Agave-Fiber Straws can be disposed of in standard trash and will begin decomposing after a 12-month period.
“Every year, billions upon billions of single-use plastic straws are discarded. These straws take centuries to break down and pose a serious threat to our global ecosystem,” said Lutz Arnhold, managing director at Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi. “We believe small actions can lead to immense changes, and we’re proud to offer an alternative to single-use plastics for our guests. We hope the the Código 1530 Agave-Fiber Straws will encourage our guests to take collective action against the issue of plastic pollution and hope that others in Santa Fe will reduce their usage of single-use plastics.”
Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi’s latest effort to reduce single-use plastics are a testament to its commitment to environmental stewardship. In 2018, Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi partnered with Clean the World, a global health organization, to recycle discarded soaps at the hotel and collaborated with The Humble Co. to replace all plastic toothbrushes at the hotel with Humble Brushes, an environmentally friendly alternative crafted with biodegradable, sustainably-grown bamboo. Last year, the hotel also phased out print newspapers and magazines and instead offered guests access to publications through a digital subscription service in order to reduce paper waste.
