Rosewood Mayakoba Provides Eco-Minded Summer Experiences To Protect Endangered Sea Turtles
July 2, 2019
Riviera Maya, Mexico (June 2, 2019) – Rosewood Mayakoba, the award-winning resort nestled in the lush enclave of the Riviera Maya, offers indulgence with awareness and is built to abide by the highest of eco-standards. This summer, the property is expanding its immersive, eco-minded experiences to support the protection of endangered sea turtles that nest on Mexico’s beaches each year.
“Consciously working to show respect for the environment and our community has always been an important part of our culture,” said Daniel Scott, Managing Director of Rosewood Mayakoba. “Alongside cultivating native plants in our gardens, eliminating single-use plastic throughout the resort, and building an elementary school for local children, the protection of sea turtles in the region is a crucial component of our mission to protect and foster biodiversity on a global scale.”
Conservation-driven experiences on the property for both adults and families include:
- Tortuga Cocktail: Available throughout the summer months, guests at Rosewood Mayakoba can toast to sea turtle conservation with the Akumal Mezcalita Cocktail offered across the property’s captivating dining venues including Casa del Lago, Punta Bonita, Agave Azul, and on the beach. Mixed with gin, Martini Bianco, lemongrass, raspberry syrup and lemon, 20% of the proceeds benefit the work of Centro Ecológico Akumal, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to sustainability-related issues including the conservation of nesting sea turtles and hatchlings in Quintana Roo.
- Daily Wildlife Eco-Tours: Guests can enjoy learning about Mexico’s abundant wildlife through the resort’s family-friendly wildlife tours. The property offers daily excursions for children departing from Rose Buds® at 10:00 a.m. followed by an 11:00 a.m. tour for adults and families beginning at the main lobby dock. Guests will learn more about the sea turtles that call Mexico home, focusing on rehabilitation and protection efforts.
- Educational Turtle Release with Rosewood Explorers: Guided by the property’s resident sustainability expert, children can learn about the release of nesting sea turtles into the Caribbean Sea, a natural phenomenon that takes places from June through October. Additional eco-themed programming for kids includes educational lessons on the importance of preservation, tortoise arts and crafts projects, and beach games highlighting native species of sea turtles and how the resort ensures their protection.
- Eco-friendly Initiatives: Rosewood Mayakoba works diligently to protect the environment in which it resides and implements green programs to support the surrounding natural habitat. Recent initiatives for maintaining the highest of standards in eco-practices include the elimination of single-use plastic straws and replacing them with biodegradable alternatives made with avocado seeds and corn; the use of energy conservation methods such as motion sensor lighting, high efficiency water heaters and led luminaires; waste control management; water conservation efforts; and sustainable purchasing, where the resort works with audited suppliers who have environmentally-friendly procedures that benefit both customers and employees.
