Matt Scantland invites guests on a journey exploring the vast underground rivers and ancient cave systems that exist beneath the Mayakoba nature reserve
August 25, 2022
RIVIERA MAYA, MEXICO (August 25, 2022) — Rosewood Mayakoba, the renowned ultra-luxury resort on a 620-acre nature preserve in the heart of Riviera Maya, is pleased to introduce Rosewood resident, entrepreneur, and cave diver Matt Scantland as the property’s inaugural Rosewood PlaceMaker. The latest extension of the brand’s guiding A Sense of Place™ philosophy, wherein each property is designed to immerse guests in the destination, the PlaceMakers program taps the pioneers of Rosewood’s communities to harness local culture through bespoke experiences and promote an authentic feeling of affinity and belonging.
Matt discovered cave diving more than 10 years ago and first came to Riviera Maya in 2012, immediately falling in love with the area, which has the most extensive underwater caves in the world. In 2020, he bought a home at Rosewood Mayakoba, where he now spends several months a year with his wife and family, and leads the Cenotes of Mayakoba Project, an effort to discover and document the area’s underwater caves so that more people can understand the importance of protecting these special places.
“It’s been the opportunity of a lifetime to explore and document the caves underneath the Mayakoba nature reserve, raising awareness for the Riviera Maya’s cave systems and promoting environmental conservation of this precious area,” says Rosewood Mayakoba PlaceMaker Matt Scantland. “Due to the prominence of the Mayakoba destination, we have a distinct opportunity to introduce the caves to many influential people – and we’ve found that people invariably care about this environment once they learn more about it. Already, the images and video we’ve been able to bring out of the caves has inspired incredible passion among guests of Mayakoba, and among the staff that nurture this area every day.”
As PlaceMaker for Rosewood Mayakoba, Matt Scantland invites guests to learn more about the ancient underwater cave systems that thrive quietly beneath Mayakoba and join him in protecting and preserving this fascinating yet fragile environment. Inspired by Matt’s Cenotes of Mayakoba Project, Rosewood Mayakoba has developed curated activations and programming for guests, including a two-day wellness experience that taps into the spiritual energy and power of the Yucatan’s famed cenotes, long considered the gateway between the human world and the underworld in pre-Hispanic cultures. For those looking for insider intel from the adventure and environmental enthusiast, Matt has also curated a guide of his favorite places and activities within the destination – from swimming with whale sharks to fly fishing in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere – which underscore the region’s rich natural environment and support sustainable travel.
“It’s a privilege to support Matt Scantland and see the fruits of this incredible two-year project unearthing the wonders we always knew existed beneath this land, but had never laid eyes on,” says Daniel Scott, Regional Vice President and Managing Director at Rosewood Mayakoba. “Matt invited us on this journey, sparking amazement from guests and associates alike as he shared glimpses into the underwater world he was discovering on his dives. We’re in awe of his passion to shine light on the splendor of the Riviera Maya, this pocket of the Yucatan that we call home.”
